When you’re in a country where the rainy season has just started, chances are good you’ll find yourself sitting on the open patio (or if you’re in luck, somewhere outside without any cover 😀 ) watching the rain come down.
Over here it’s like the sound of static noise on the radio. But during and after you could get some nice pictures…

And of course, it may happen so, that in this kind of weather (or any kind of weather, for that matter) other *little* critters may come out to have a look as well…

I’ve missed them before. Used to see them way earlier in the year, at least the Admirals. But now there were a lot of them (and thus I shot a lot of them, to make up for the lack of pictures in early summer 😀 ). They were a little skittish at first, but after I introduced myself and we got more acquainted…

About a year and a half ago I went through my parents’ house to see if there was something interesting to shoot. Flowers are always good, and since my mom’s pretty much an orchid magician and there’s always one blooming, there’s always a flower to photograph. However, since she manages to keep the things blooming, there’s not much turn-around in the variety of them, there’s only so much you can do without things getting the same.

So the one that I shot this time looks like this i color:

D200, ISO100, 1,5 sec @ f/11, Tamron 90mm macro, SB-800 off-camera flash

It didn’t have quite as much flowers as last time around, but that would’ve made this time’s version probably too busy.
Here’s the new version:

Get in closer… Just give it a try…

And especially for my Sweetie, because she also just looooooooooooves the Finnish winters (ahem) I picked her a flower 🙂

Now this is something worth noting 🙂
I love nature. It’s one of the many things I photograph. But to say that I don’t have “green fingers” is probably a serious understatement.
Now with the Better Half gone I’m responsible for the plants and it’s something I’ve been dreading for as long as I can remember. It’s a disaster waiting to happen, a time bomb persistently counting down to zero. We don’t have many of them in our apartment, but they’re all of a different kind. That one needs a bit of water every day, that one needs a bit more water, but every other day, and it’s enough if you give that one a bit less water every third day, but feel the soil, if it’s wet, you should wait.
WTF??
So… One has already reached the state of “no more brain activity”. It’s in a coma, a serious one. It’s… well… a vegetable, so to speak, for lack of a better word. And I have serious concerns if it will ever again regain consciousness (I will have to discuss with the PhD when she comes home, but we might have to euthanize, sorry to say).
Another one, although still very much alive, doesn’t seem to have as many leaves anymore as it did over the summer, but that might not be my fault, that might also be the change of season (hopefully).

So in short… even plants that are deemed next to immortal die a swift, but painful death in my care. Imagine my surprise when I went to water the plants today, and I found one of the Better Half’s favorites (and, as she’s mentioned before, one that seems to be difficult to get to flower (not to her, though, she gets everything to flower 🙂 )) with a big white flower and otherwise stuffed to the rim with buds. They seem to have grown overnight. I didn’t notice them before. But hey… Victory! 🙂
And the cats and the turtle are still alive, too! Maybe I’m not such a lost case after all 😀

I’d been meaning to go to this field already for quite awhile, but always something else came up and then the trip to England came and I still hadn’t gone. I expected everything to be gone by the time I got back from England, but much to my surprise everything was still there. But then the weather turned sour and I had to wait for almost another week still before I actually got to go. But there was a nice day in between all the rainy ones a couple of days ago (not the same day as the wedding 😉 ) and I waited for sunset to go and shoot.
The ground was a mess… sticky clay, especially after all the rain, but I guess they thrive well on that.

Summer on its way out…

Did I ever mention how much I love my 50 mm f/1.4? I didn’t? I must’ve! Well, if I didn’t…: I love my 50 mm f/1.4. And why, would you wonder…? Because the right subjects shot with an aperture larger than f/2 give you this magnificent depth of field, this sweet bokeh which is such a feast to look at…

A week or so ago I was in Holland for a couple of days. The few days before I left it had rained cats and dogs, every day, the whole day, without stopping. When I called with the home front back in Holland I heard it had been and was supposed to stay great weather. That was positive.
But upon arrival the weather had turned 180 degrees, and I was left with spending my days in Holland while it was raining cats and dogs, every day, the whole day, save for the last half day before I left.
So what do you do when you can’t go outside, and you’ve worked to the point of irreparable boredom?

Right: you start to go through your mom’s window sills. Good stuff to be found there! 🙂
